New talk on software quality visualization in 2010

I am currently working on a new paper and talk on software quality visualization. The prototype for the software is already working.

Please have a look at the tools section.

I plan to propose the talk to the EuroPython conference in Birmingham. Hopefully I will not miss the deadline for the proposal ;-))

Past Events:

Euro Python Conference 2009 in Birmingham

28. June - 4. July: I am looking forward to visit Birmingham again to meet more Python enthusiasts. I will give a talk on "Domainspecific Languages for Functional Testing".

See EuroPython Talks Abstracts.

μPy Munich Python User Group May 2009 Meeting

On 14. of May I gave a talk on "Extending the Roundup Issue Tracker" to the local Python user group.

μPy Munich Python User Group February 2009 Meeting

On 12. of February I gave a talk on "Open Source Testing Tools in Practice" to the local Python user group. Pekka Klärck (the maintainer) gave an intorduction on how to use the Robot Framework for keyword driven tests http://code.google.com/p/robotframework/ .

Open Source Meets Business (OSMB) Congress 2009 Nuremberg

On January 27/28/28 2009 the anual congress OSMB was held in Nuremberg for the fourth time. The Heise publishing company was again able to attract a fine croud of open source and business people.

I was invited to give a talk on "Open Source Testing Tools".

What was particularily interesting to me:

  • How everybody talks about Cloud Computing, Virtualization and SaaS
  • Financial crisis will strengthen open source initiatives
  • Helpful insights how Open Source works in Germany
  • Open Source tools for the computer center
  • Open Source ERP solutions are a valid option for SME companies

μPy Munich Python User Group January 2009 Meeting

On 15. January 2009 I gave my new talk on "Domain Specific Languages for Functional Testing" to the local Python user group.

I received a lot of valuable feedback. Especially the comments on the implementation alternatives will save me a lot of trouble:

  • In Python 2.6 / 3.0 the implementation of the AST changes
  • In Python 2.6 / 3.0 the import hooks change
  • Therefore I will be better off implementing the DSL within a customized nose test runner

Mozilla Camp Europe 2008 in Barcelona

Mark Fink at Mozilla Camp Europe 08

October 25 & 26, 2008 I spent with Mozilla people. I was invited to attend the conference and to talk about Open Source Tools for Test Automation.

Over the last years Mozilla has developed a complete stack of fine quality assurance tools programmed in Python - I could not wait to meet the folks behind these tools. Mozilla QA really rocks!

I got to know a lot of highly skilled open source enthusiasts and attended some excellent talks which results in a long list of very interesting things to look at in detail over the next weeks.

Talks of particular interest were:

  • Mozilla QA team organization & responsibilities
  • Manual testing tools & How to write and minimize testcases
  • Mozilla tools for Test Automation
  • Firefox as a application development platform (Mark Shuttleworth mentioned this lately in a keynode and now I absolutely understand why)
  • Firebug and Chromebug

The conference location and facilities were great which also supported the positive atmosphere. Barcelona itself did the trick anyway!

PyConUK 2008 in Birmingham

Dozens of very well thought out talks and tutorials by e.g. core developers of Python and Django and professionals who successfully built applications by using those technologies.

What really surprised me was the impressively high number of talks dedicated on testing and testing tools (4 out of 45 ~9%). Even the other presenters devoted substantial sections of there talks on how they already do (the community should do) testing and what tools and methodology they use. Agile development and test first development processes are successfully adapted by people of the community and I am very happy to see this.

I went to PyConUK 2008 to take part in the talks and tutorials; I learned a lot. As a consequence thereof I wanted to pay back the community by giving a talk myself on the topic of 'Open source testing tools in practice'. The talk basically covered the approach and what kind of tools I used for my current project assignment to address different quality issues. At the end of my talk lots of good questions and useful remarks came up. Thanks again for that! Being exited about the positive atmosphere during the talk I gave a little preview on the topic I am currently doing research on: "Domain Specific Languages for Test Automation". I got inspiring feedback on that one, too. So probably there will be a talk on the next EuroPython conference about that.

Both keynotes mainly reflected the current excellent position of Python; and the obstacles that we as a community will hopefully manage to overcome soon.

I am very happy that I took this opportunity to get to know so many great and inspiring people. And I am very grateful for that.
